Protect high seas biodiversity

چکیده
The high seas—marine areas beyond national jurisdiction (1)—cover nearly half of Earth's surface (2). seas support our planet in countless ways, from regulating the climate, to feeding millions people, supporting industries that contribute billions dollars global economy (3). Even so, less than 1% are fully protected (4), and current patchwork management lack oversight leaves them vulnerable abuse. In 2017, United Nations resolved develop an international treaty for conservation sustainable use seas. Negotiations set end this year. We must ensure forthcoming framework conserves high-seas biodiversity promotes equitable use.

Harnessing carbon payments to protect biodiversity.
Initiatives to reduce carbon emissions from deforestation and degradation (REDD) are providing increasing incentives for forest protection. The collateral benefits for biodiversity depend on the extent to which emissions reductions and biodiversity conservation can be achieved in the same places. Globally, we demonstrate spatial trade-offs in allocating funds to protect forests for carbon and b...
متن کاملUntapped Bounty: Sampling the Seas to Survey Microbial Biodiversity
0371 Being invisible to the naked eye, microbes managed to escape scientifi c scrutiny until the mid-17th century, when Leeuwenhoek invented the microscope. These cryptic organisms continued to thwart scientists' efforts to probe, describe, and classify them until about 40 years ago, owing largely to a limited morphology that defi es traditional taxonomic methods and an enigmatic physiology tha...
متن کاملStatus of Marine Biodiversity of the China Seas
China's seas cover nearly 5 million square kilometers extending from the tropical to the temperate climate zones and bordering on 32,000 km of coastline, including islands. Comprehensive systematic study of the marine biodiversity within this region began in the early 1950s with the establishment of the Qingdao Marine Biological Laboratory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Since that time sci...
متن کاملDoes biodiversity protect humans against infectious disease?
Control of human infectious disease has been promoted as a valuable ecosystem service arising from the conservation of biodiversity. There are two commonly discussed mechanisms by which biodiversity loss could increase rates of infectious disease in a landscape. First, loss of competitors or predators could facilitate an increase in the abundance of competent reservoir hosts. Second, biodiversi...
متن کاملHigh-seas fish wars generate marine reserves.
The effective management of marine fisheries is an ongoing challenge at the intersection of biology, economics, and policy. One way in which fish stocks-and their habitats-can be protected is through the establishment of marine reserves, areas that are closed to fishing. Although the potential economic benefits of such reserves have been shown for single-owner fisheries, their implementation qu...
